Reading
A bright new early-reading lab opens for our youngest pupils
Beanbags, big imaginations and a wall of brand-new books — our Kindergarten and Grade 1 readers have a joyful new home for story time.
This term we opened a space we have dreamed about for years: a dedicated early-reading lab for our youngest readers. It is bright, soft and a little bit magical — exactly the kind of room a five-year-old wants to disappear into with a good story.
The lab pairs a wall of new picture books with quiet reading nooks, a story carpet and a small recording corner where children can hear their own voices read back to them. For a child sounding out their very first words, that moment of recognition is everything.
Why early reading matters
Reading is the quiet engine under everything else a child learns. Get it right early — gently, joyfully, without pressure — and confidence follows into maths, science and beyond. Our approach is simple: read every day, follow the child’s curiosity, and make books something they reach for, not something they are handed.
Families are welcome to visit the lab on any school visit. Fair warning: you may have trouble getting your little one to leave.
